Thanks for answering some of these questions, firstly what is your full name name and nick name:
David Goldstraw: I’ve had a few nicknames but currently seems to be “Goldy”
1. What is your shoe size?
2. When did you first take up Hockey?
When I was 15 which was 1981! As a laugh in a games lesson
3. What positions have you played?
Always a defender (I guess that’s down to my natural lightening pace!)
4. What is your favourite book and what are you reading at the moment?
Can’t really think of a favourite. I enjoyed the “Rebus” books by Ian Rankin
Currently reading “Lords of the Bow” by Con Iggulden. It’s one of a series of semi fictional accounts of the life of Genghis Khan
5. What is your favourite film?
Can I have 2? “The man who would be king” (Sean Connery and Michael Caine) and a tie between “Italian Job” (old 1) and “Usual Suspects” (OK that’s 3!)
6. Best player you have played with or against?
Imran Sherwani. He was Leek Coach when they celebrated their 75th anniversary and I played against him in an old v current game Could even get close enough to ask if he’d like drink afterwards!
7. Top tip, for Hockey?
Remember it’s a team game and the best team usually wins
8. What are you listening to, music wise at the moment?
Don’t really do much music. The kids are blasting me with Lady Gaga and Katy Perry
9. Best advice given to you?
In a hockey context, “Play to your strengths and know your limitations”. Generally “don’t eat yellow snow”
10.Who has been the biggest influence on your Hockey?
My old school teacher Mr Bullock (he used to play with something that looked like an up-turned umbrella!) Although it started as a laugh he really encouraged us to play and got the first ever boys team at the school and introduced me and about 8 others to play for Leek If only we could go back to grass and a 2-3-5 line up!
11. What next for NSWHC?
It’s great the ladies are doing well this season and attracting more players. As the Mens section continues to improve we are bound to attract more players, and get bigger and stronger. The junior section is exploding (in size, not literally!) so the future should be good. We need to make sure that all the good ones want to stay and we are good enough to keep them.
12. Who would you have on your side, who is a present member of NSWHC in a full kicking scrapping fight and why?
Any of the keepers. It’s well known they are slightly insane and also have all the protective gear. I’d be right behind them though!
13. Where do you Splash the Cash? (What shops do you spend your Money?) Mainly Sainsburys!
14. What was the best day of your life?
Being at the birth of my kids (okay I know that’s 3!) and watching Port Vale win the Autoglass trophy at Wembley in 1994 (ok 4) I’d better mention my wedding day as well (in case Fiona reads it)
15. Favourite food
16. Favourite drink
17. Your ideal weekend?
6th team victory, Port Vale winning, Stoke getting hammered. Lie in on Sunday and a barbie when you don’t need a coat
18. Advice to the government?
Ban reality TV programs and Eastenders
19. Dogs or cats and if so name of you pet?
Hate both. Consequently we have no Pets
20. Can we improve NSWHC in any way?
With the pitch timings it’s sometimes hard to get to know the folks in the other teams especially the higher teams as they even train on a different night. I know a lot of names in the 1s and 2s but not many faces. Don’t know the solution, but I think it would improve the social feel of the club if we mixed in a bit more.
